Honouring World Rhino Day through a cultural masterpiece

4

In support of World Rhino Day on 22nd September, the National Children’s Theatre (NCT) proudly presented Hope the Rhino / Ithemba the Rhino - an inspiring educational and literary theatre production.

Through creative cultural ingenuity, the NCT worked to teach children about saving our rhinos, creating awareness around the benefits of environmentalism as well as the joys of live theatre.

The production was inspirited by the impressionable words found in a story written by 12-year-old Taskeen Waddeed in 2018: “Only a rhino needs a rhino horn.” Her story highlighted the importance of the rhino horn for survival, and the play emphasised the multifarious dangers that South African wildlife is confronted with on a daily basis.

Adapted by Moira Katz and directed by Ntambo Rapatla. the play was also a tribute to the unsung heroes and heroines, who fight selflessly and tirelessly to save the endangered rhino species.
