Ho ho ho! The festive season is here. For many of us, that means the excitement of holiday shopping, travel and giving.
Unfortunately, this is also prime time for fraudsters, who take advantage of increased spending and distracted shoppers. At Barker Insurance, we’re committed to helping you stay safe and secure during this time.
Fraudsters use a variety of tactics to target holiday shoppers. Here are some practical tips to help you protect yourself from fraud this season:
Tips to avoid getting scammed…
Use tap-to-pay options: Avoid handing over your card; instead, opt for contactless payments where possible.
Monitor transactions: Regularly check your bank notifications and statements for unauthorised transactions.
Be alert: If you receive a call asking for personal information, pin codes and banking information, and it sounds suspicious, it probably is.
Phishing - Think before you click the link. A lot of scammers either send an sms or email with links prompting you to click to obtain your personal information. Rather, go directly to the retailers' website via your browser.
Shop from trusted sites: Always buy from reputable websites with secure payment gateways (look for “https://” in the URL).
Avoid Public Wi-Fi: When shopping online, avoid using public Wi-Fi networks, which are often unsecured and vulnerable to hackers.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Strengthen your accounts by enabling 2FA, which adds an extra layer of security to your login process.
Verify deals: If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Research the website or seller before making any purchases.
Be prepared, stay safe
While the holidays are a time for celebration, it’s crucial to remain vigilant about your financial and personal security. By proactively protecting yourself, you can shop, travel, and enjoy the festive season with peace of mind.
