We have been advised that there is a syndicate stealing vehicles from Panel Beaters and Dealerships. High value vehicles are currently being targeted by these syndicates at vehicle dealerships and especially Auto Body Repair Companies.
How do they do it?
The suspects obtain the details pertaining to a specific vehicle at the Auto Body Repairer including the amount outstanding that must be paid as excess.. This amount is then paid into the account of the Auto Body Repairer and the suspects then proceed to collect the vehicle “on behalf of the client” or have it delivered to an address for the client. A rather inexpensive way of “buying” a car. Service providers must ensure that the correct owners/clients take delivery of these vehicles.
How can you protect yourself?
If you are taking your vehicle in for repairs or a service please insist that the Panel Beater or Dealership only releases the vehicle to you. Insist that they keep a copy of your identity document on file and only return your vehicle to you after verifying your identity.
