BIB Unite did not hesitate to assist Bokamoso Day Care Centre when they approached us for assistance; getting in touch with the centre through Stanley Mayisela, a BIB employee whose daughter Blessing attends the centre. We paid the day care a visit in June 2010, donating much-needed mattresses, toys and snacks, as well as organising a “Bokamoso Day Care” sign.
Having the opportunity to meet the children was perhaps the most rewarding part for us. Welcomed by songs and showing off their newly learned skills, the children of Bokamoso weren’t shyto show their appreciation and joy.
Bokamoso Day Care centre was established in February 2010 when Anne Mohlahlana recognised the need for such a facility. She says: “I would see cars picking up the young children of the domestic workers or gardeners and taking them along into town or Hillbrow as they could not afford day care fees.”
Anne felt uneasy witnessing these desperate circumstances and felt an urge to approach the Rabbi at the neighbouring Oxford Shul. It was agreed that the empty building on the premises would be used as a day care centre.
Relying solely on companies for sponsorship, financially or via donations, Anne opened the centre with 37 children and has since expanded to accommodate nearly 70, giving their parents and grandparents much-needed peace of mind.
Vibrant, generous and full of life, Anne has made it her mission to provide a safe haven and stimulating learning space for children of domestic workers and gardeners in and around Killarney. Shehas been an inspiration tous, considering what she has achieved with minimal resources. It was certainly a rewarding and touching visit for Barker Insurance Brokers.
