Geared and ready to go - 1965Ride 850km for education

  • March 23, 2017 | Written by Louise Forsyth

Who’s keen to ride 850km for a good cause?

It’s that time of year again where the brave cyclists from the “1965Ride” take on their annual ride from Johannesburg to Queenstown to raise funds for educational scholarships and bursaries for deserving, talented children in quality schools.

The aims and objectives of the Queenstown Education Foundation as per the 1965Ride:

  • To transform education in the Queenstown district by elevating the standards and by improving the quality of learning and teaching throughout the community from pre-school to PhD.

  • To give deserving young men and women the opportunity to receive a quality education, and thus provide them with the chance of a lifetime. This is our key objective.

  • The 1965Ride cycle tour is part of this broader vision to support the development of the schools and to provide talented youngsters with the opportunity of a lifetime – a good education.

  • It is also part of an initiative to publicise the vision and activities of the Foundation in order to garner support to extend its activities.

  • To encourage cyclists from other cities and towns in South Africa to undertake similar tours in support of education in Queenstown.

To date this annual ride has raised ±R4million.

Barker Insurance Brokers love to help where we can and especially when it involves education. The Barker Team have been involved in this initiative for the past 5 years and this year is no different. The Barker Insurance Team have made a monetary donation to this deserving fund as well as sponsoring the insurance for the support vehicles used to assist the riders on their journey to keep them safe, hydrated and well fed.

Rhett Barker had this to say: “It is a privilege for the Barker Insurance Family to be associated with the 1965Ride as it is such an incredible cause. We are proudly South African and the only way to achieve long term prosperity for our nation is to educate our youth. This is a mammoth task however with initiatives like 1965Ride it is possible for our dreams to become a reality.  A special thanks to Tony Frost and your Team of cyclists for demonstrating such incredible commitment to this cause and we wish you all a very safe and enjoyable ride from Johannesburg down to Queens College in Queenstown in April.”
